On Wednesday 27th October 2008, Valentine Music presented an evening with The Darius Brubeck Quartet at Ray’s Jazz, Foyles, Soho. The evening was a celebration of the release of the new album by The Darius Brubeck Quartet, ‘For Lydia and the Lion’. Uniting new material with fresh takes on past compositions the album includes jazz standard ‘I’ll Be Seeing You’ and Bob Dylan’s melancholy protest anthem, ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’.
The evening was in full swing from the off, with the quartet playing to a packed house. The set opened with the sun-flooded sound of South African jazz legend Abdullah Ibrahim’s beautiful Tsakwe and included a swoonsome rendition of ‘For Lydia’, written for Brubeck’s granddaughter. The atmosphere was amazing, the playing perfect and the response nothing but positive. As the band’s powerfully moving rework of ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’ came to a close, there were cheers and applause and a genuine feeling that here before us in this most intimate of settings was a rare thing: a superb band led by one of music’s great talents.
“The whole band were really uplifted by the enthusiastic response and the large crowd. This is a good way for artists and publishers to team-up in the new-style music industry, where more artists are going independent. I want to thank both Foyles and Valentine Music for getting the CD, For Lydia and the Lion, off to an auspicious start.” Darius Brubeck

We would like to thank Foyles, Catherine Brubeck and of course, Darius and the Quartet for making the evening possible.
